Deciding What’s Important: First Graders Generate Class Rules

img_7963On the first day of school, first graders generated and discussed what rules they wanted for their class. Days later,  the students chose a rule they were interested in illustrating and worked cooperatively or some solo, in illustrating that rule through bright and colorful posters.

“They worked so well together and were so engaged,” commented teacher Cassia Laffin. “It is a great way for them to take ownership of the rules that now hang on our walls as a reminder; and know that these are rules that they, themselves made. Kids have great ideas; all they need is an adult to facilitate and help bring their great ideas to light!”
