The sixth graders have completed their integrated study of the history and culture of ancient Egypt,Lessons on Egypt included chemistry, history and STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics) and a field trip to the Rosicrucian Museum in San Jose. In history class, students watched films, read, studied, and even mummified apples to see the desiccation process. In math class, students learned how to write Egyptian numerals. In science they studied the angles of the sun (an important aspect of understanding climate) and created a perfectly positioned sundial with artistic Egyptian numerals.
Sixth grade always studies ancient cultures in world history. When asked why ancient Egypt is a good emphasis for this age group, teacher Michelle Beske stated, “Ancient Egypt was one of the greatest and most powerful civilizations in the history of the world. Its mystery (scientists are still uncovering new discoveries today), intrigue, rich culture and glamorous artifacts are attractive to sixth graders.”###
