Education in Action: Learning Together at Monterey Bay Aquarium

img_20161101_114235939Mount Madonna School’s second and seventh grade classes had the opportunity this week to explore and learn together at the Monterey Bay Aquarium. The two classes are learning “buddies” and get together weekly to engage in STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics) – related curriculum.

“The academic learning that happened helped students come to a better understanding of the global community we collectively share and our responsibility for the health of our oceans, land animals and ourselves,” shared teacher and MMS Lower School Director Jenni Leach. “Students learned about different species and their food chain, ocean and fresh water habitats, geography, plastic pollution, creative art and artists and more! Students observed deep sea and penguin feeding demonstrations and learned what seafood is responsibly caught and managed. The social and emotional growth for all was evident as buddies navigated, negotiated and communicated for hours on the way to and from the aquarium, around the exhibits and during lunch.”
