High School Students Attend University of Southern California Model United Nations Conference

Last week, Mount Madonna School (MMS) high school students traveled to Los Angeles to attend the Model United Nations (Model UN or MUN) conference at University of Southern California (USC), March 24-26. Despite the long road trip, the conference was a rewarding experience in a number of ways.

Afterward, students remarked on their experience participating at both the USC conference and in Model UN at MMS.

“I have learned that a big part of MUN is about putting yourself out there and making yourself seen and heard,” said sophomore Lagi Hunnicutt, who has attended three MUN conferences. “For me, this makes the learning experience at MUN conferences a lot more engaging. Having a Model UN club at MMS gives students a chance to see what it’s like to debate real-world conflicts.”

Junior Ethan Lee, attending his first MUN conference, echoed her comments: “Having a Model UN club allows students to see how people deal with issues at the highest levels of government, and it teaches us how to conduct ourselves respectfully.”

He noted further that his experience in MUN has contributed to his own growth as a student and an individual.

“I’ve learned that although talking in front of a lot of people is hard for me,” said Lee, “when I’m talking about a subject that I’m passionate about or have thoroughly researched, it’s a lot easier for me to muster up the courage.”

MMS students will again host their own regional MUN conference in the fall.
