Prior to joining Mount Madonna School (MMS) in 2023, costumer Lauren Reece obtained a B.A. in fashion with an emphasis in design from Arizona State University. She joins MMS with much enthusiasm for her new role. Social media coordinator Carly Wheelehan recently had the opportunity to meet Lauren and learn more about her.
How did you get into costuming?
I started sewing when I was nine years old, and I’ve loved the process of creation ever since. I studied fashion design in college and then participated in fashion shows. Fashion shows are a lot of work but I did enjoy them immensely. I love pink and frilly details – such as the vest that I’m wearing today; I sewed this myself.
What MMS production are you working on right now?
It’s crunch time for “Into the Woods”! I’m making so many leaf ponchos and gnome hats and shoes, and doing alterations on dresses. We’re doing a lot of fittings right now, which has been my favorite part so far – getting to meet and know all of the students. They are all excited about the show, which makes me more excited and brings up the energy for everyone involved!
What was your experience working on the middle school production of “Elf The Musical, Jr.”?
The middle school students made it the best experience. I was so impressed by their performance and attitude the whole way through. I made over 30 pairs of elf shoes, which was a crazy process. I had help from parents, thankfully!
What do you hope to bring to your role as costumer at MMS?
I’m hoping to bring a sense of positivity and excitement while I work on making things bigger and better for the stage.
What are you most excited about being at MMS?
I think MMS performing arts is a special program that not many schools offer, and it’s so enriching for students. Performing arts builds character and it’s not something that a lot of children get to experience, especially in the younger grades. My middle school certainly didn’t have it. It’s very cool how much the school supports performing arts and seems to truly enjoy it. It brings the whole community together.
When do you start work on “Ramayana!”?
We already had our first meeting! I have never seen “Ramayana!” live but I watched a video of the 2019 performance and it was like nothing I’d ever seen before. I know it’s a lot of work for everyone involved, and I can’t wait to see it come together.
